Jobird's Soulicious Grooves - POETRY of SOUND from the HEART Soulful. Sweet. Intimate. Exciting music for living in the now.
Vancouver Island folk-jazz singer songwriter Joanna Finch, has a voice you will never forget. "She gives me goosebumps when she sings" (Rachel Mooney-nutritionist/musician). Joanna been described as: "a human soul on fire..." (Shane Philip- videographer) whose "joyous love of life and the environment infects her audience," (Betty Donaldson PHD) and "reminds me of the great female entertainers of the musical movie era. Her performances have brought me such joy and exquisite moments of clarity as to why music is considered the language of the world - she exudes it!" (Sarah Wood, pianist, Composer) Joanna's diverse original repertoire spans eras and nations, uniting and uplifting her all-ages audiences. “My heart is the judge of all things; in my everyday world I breathe in impressions of liberty, conflict, love and whimsy and breathe out notes that turn to songs. Love and social justice are my spring boards. Having an audience to share my stories and songs with is a gift I never take for granted.”
“Jobird”, dubbed by a childhood friend, has been honing her craft for her entire life with words and sounds that stem from nature, studies in poetry and literature, and classical and traditional folk at the Royal Conservatory of Music, plus Anglican sacred music at her Great Grandfathers church. Art Rock, Punk, New Wave and Cool-Soul music ignites much of her writing. Growing up listening to her mothers jazz records, then falling in love with Brazilian jazz while living on a sailboat in the Caribbean planted the seeds for a life devoted to the study of jazz forms. She studied with singers Shannon Gunn, Rhiannon, Louise Rose, and experimental musicians Francois Houle, Hans Bennick and Torsten Muller at Vancouver's Creative Music Institute. She has a particular panache for French Cabaret, Latin Jazz, and early gypsy swing. Joanna loves to dance.
Unlike many artists who begin their career by covering others material, then gradually inserting their originals, Joanna, a prolific songwriter, has always performed her own material, and chooses covers that compliment her style. Her long standing admiration and respect for Canadian folk gurus, L. Cohen and J Mitchell, bring luck and grace to Joanna's shows when she invites the Muse to infuse her songs with their magic. Sultry, warm and sweet vocal stylings are embellished by Jobird’s superb improvisations of “vocal trumpet” strings and beat boxing.
As a song writer Joanna is eclectic; as a singer Jobird's voice is an eternal source of exploration and pleasure. "She is a walking vibrating sound expression. She is percussion at the beach, instruments of stone, shell and wood. She is sultry jazz in a dimly lit venue." Corre Alice, Artist
Respected internationally for her exquisite songwriting and arrangements, Joanna has shared the stage with some of the best. Past performances include travels in Ecuador, Cuba, Antigua, US, and Canada, where collaborating musicians include Sean Mooney, Miles Black, Tina Jones, Jorge Triana, Judy Norbury, Checo Soto, Sarah Wood, Pat Coleman, Brodie Dawson, Peter Gilmore, Jim Lambert and many more. Nominated for two awards for In The Arms of Morpheus, her debut album that made it to #7 on Alberta’s CKUA radio charts, and international radio play, plus two acclaimed music videos, Joanna’s voice is not to be missed. CDs will be available to buy and download cards for her singles.
